The A. Kasteyev Museum holds “Portrait of the Writer S. Mukanov”, painted by Abram Cherkassky in 1952. The museum record describes it as oil on canvas and gives its dimensions as 95 × 67 centimetres.
Cherkassky served a prison sentence in Karlag. Later, during the war, his family was evacuated to Aktyubinsk. The artist subsequently worked and taught in Alma-Ata.
Mukanov is shown seated at a table, wearing a white tunic against a dark background. The restrained composition focuses attention on the writer’s figure.
