Nauryz, Novruz, Nowruz and other names refer to a shared spring festival celebrated in countries across Asia and the Middle East. Customs vary from place to place. 1

Shared traditions

UNESCO's decision lists festive meals, visits to relatives, older people and neighbours, music, dancing, games and street performances. It also mentions reconciliation and settling disputes. These customs are passed down from older to younger generations. 2

Changes to the UNESCO inscription

In 2016, the inscription covered 12 countries. In 2024, UNESCO added an updated multinational inscription listing 13 countries. This change concerns the heritage list, rather than the origins of the festival itself. 1 2
