In April 1940, Ola Watowa and her son Andrzej were deported from Lviv to Kazakhstan. The NKVD had arrested her husband, the writer Aleksander Wat, in January of that year. In Ivanovka near Zharma, Ola made fuel briquettes from manure and fired bricks. Following the amnesty for Poles in 1941, she moved to Antonovka near Chimkent. In early 1942, she was reunited with Aleksander in Kazakhstan. The family returned to Poland in April 1946.

In her memoir “Wszystko co najważniejsze”, Ola Watowa described her exile and life with her son. Later, she worked on Aleksander Wat’s manuscripts and the publication of his works.
