In exile in Chiili, Levi Yitzchak Schneerson lacked writing materials. His wife Chana made ink from plants so that he could write commentaries on religious texts.
NKVD officers arrested him on 28 March 1939. After the investigation, Schneerson was sentenced to five years of exile in Chiili, now Shieli. Chana voluntarily joined him there. A page of his notes on the Zohar, written with the ink she made, survives.
In the spring of 1944, the couple were allowed to move to Alma-Ata. Levi Yitzchak died there that year and is buried in the city. Chana later took the manuscripts written during his exile in Kazakhstan to New York.
Their son Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, commissioned the publication of these works. They appeared in five volumes under the title “Likkutei Levi Yitzchak”.
