Rabbi Hillel Liberov arrived in Alma-Ata in 1944 and served the community as a shochet and spiritual leader until his death in 1982. Albert Shimoni, who was born in Almaty to a family from Iran, recalls him.

By 2020, Liberov’s grandnephew, Rabbi Saadia Liberov, was living in Almaty with his family, who had moved from Brooklyn. His wife Mina helped run classes and community programmes at the synagogue.
